Employees of the hotel put on
a show for the guests after dinner each night. Something different each time.
It was a new moon when we were there, and the stars were bright and numerous.
This was my first trip south of the equator (Bali is about 8° or 9° S
latitude), and I was hoping to see the
Southern Cross for the first time. I didn't even know if it was the right
time of year, but when I looked up after dark, there it was. High in the
south, I would say about 40° above the horizon. It looks to me embedded
in the Milky Way. I pointed it out to Khim, but she didn't seem that impressed.
I couldn't see stars hardly at all from Singapore because it was too hazy.
