A view of Boat Quay (pronounced
"kee") from across the river. In the old days the bum boats would unload
their cargo here. Now the shophouses have been restored and converted into
bars and restaurants. Singapore used to have lots of these shophouses (retail
space on the bottom floor, and living space above), but most of them were
leveled to make way for highrises and other infrastructure. The remaining
shophouses are now considered historical buildings and are being restored
and preserved.
Khim grew up in a shophouse, but they were kicked out, and it was torn down
shortly before she came to the U.S. in 1989. |
